| I have been on a mission to tighten the driveline in order to remedy a bucking or kickback sensation ocurring at low speeds during on/off throttle operation. It felt as though there was slack or freeplay in the various driveline assemblies. This symptom was not the clunking many people refer to; but rather an inability of the engine to lug at low speeds smoothly, without kickback. Getting on and off the gas pedal made the problem very obvious. After a complete driveline rebuild, most of the freeplay was eliminated. Much of it was found to be in the propeller shaft, rear differential, and drive axles. (The most common source of freeplay, the differential bushings proved to be OK). However, after replacing or rebuilding everything from the flywheel to where the tire meets the road; there remained a residual jerkiness when getting on and off the throttle. It was not severe, but it did not feel smooth either. However, after tightening up the accelerator cable, a significant portion of the balky behavior is gone. The connection between the gas pedal and engine smoothness mow seems to be more direct, with less apparent back and forth jerking of drivetrain components. I attribute this improvement to removing slack from the accelerator cable.
How to Adjust the Accelerator Cable - * With the engine idling, begin by loosening both front and rear retaining nuts on either side of the locator bracket. * Turn the rear nut so that the cable sheath is drawn rearward towards its mounting bracket. This removes slack in the cable. * When the cable begins to tighten, it will pull on the accelerator rod pulley. This will open the throttle plates and idle speed will increase. * Stop at this point and back off a quarter turn. You want all slack out of the cable, with no tension on the accelerator rod pulley. * Make certain both throttle plates are fully seated. * Secure the cable assembly in its mounting bracket by tightening the front nut against the bracket and rear nut. Cruise Control - This procedure worked so well with throttle response we also tightened up the Cruise Control cable. I was amazed at how much smoother the CC operated after eliminating cable slack. This simple adjustment dramatically improved performance. Now there is much less of the hard edged on/off jerkiness associated with modulating between coast and accel. The objective of this procedure is to remove all slack WITHOUT pulling open the throttle linkage and plates. Double check your engine idle before and after.
